How partner links and tracking work

How a click on a partner link turns into a lead, a customer and a commission, and the settings that control it.

Written by Nick

Every partner gets a link to your website with their own tracking parameter, such as yourwebsite.com/?ref=sam. Here's how Tolt follows a visitor from that click to a commission:

  1. Click: someone clicks the partner's link. The Tolt script on your website records the click and saves a cookie in their browser.

  2. Lead: when they sign up, your website sends their email to Tolt and they appear as a lead under Customers. See Track sign-ups as leads.

  3. Customer: when they pay, your payment provider tells Tolt, and the payment is matched to the lead.

  4. Commission: Tolt creates a commission for the partner based on your flows.

Tracking settings

Go to Program settings › Tracking & safeguards to control how links are tracked:

Attribution tracking settings with Cookie duration and URL parameters highlighted
  • Cookie duration: how long after a click a sign-up still counts for the partner.

  • URL parameters: the parameters partner links can use, such as ?ref, ?via and ?aff.

  • Disable partner ability to create personalized links: stops partners from making their own links.

  • Block specific parameter keywords: stops partners from using certain words in the links they create, such as your brand name.

  • Hide partner links: hides links in the partner portal, for example if partners only use coupon codes.
