Test the integration

Run one referral through your own site to check that Tolt records clicks, sign-ups and payments.

Before you invite partners, send one test referral through your own site. It shows whether Tolt records the click, the sign-up and the payment, and creates a commission.

Before you start

Your integration is set up in Settings › Integrations, and the Tolt tracking script is on your website and in your app. To pay without a full charge, see Test purchases by payment provider further down.

Run a test referral

  1. Create a test partner. Go to Partners and click New partner, or sign up through your partner portal. See Manually create a partner.

  2. Open the test partner's profile and copy their link from the Links tab.

  3. Open the link in a private browser window, so no earlier visit gets in the way.

  4. Sign up on your site with an email you haven't used there before.

  5. Make a test purchase with the same account.

  6. Back in Tolt, go to Customers › Commissions and check that the purchase created a commission for the test partner.

  7. Open the test partner's profile. On the Links tab, Clicks, Leads and Customers each show 1.

If the commission is there and each count went up, your integration works and you're ready to invite partners.

Test purchases by payment provider

  • Stripe: test in live mode. Tolt doesn't support Stripe test mode. To avoid a full charge, create a 99% off coupon in Stripe and use it at checkout.

  • Stripe Checkout Sessions: if you create sessions with stripe.checkout.sessions.create, set "customer_creation": "always". Otherwise Stripe may create a guest customer, and Tolt can't read the details it needs to credit the partner.

  • Paddle Billing: make a purchase on your live site.

  • Paddle Classic: connect your Paddle sandbox account and test there. When you're done, switch to your live Paddle account and public key.

  • Chargebee: test with a real payment, or set up the webhooks in Chargebee's test site and switch back to live when you're done.

If a count stays at 0

  • Clicks: the tracking script isn't loading on the page the link opens. Check that it's in the page's <head>. In your browser console, window.tolt_referral should show an ID after you open the link.

  • Leads: your sign-up isn't calling window.tolt.signup(). See Track sign-ups as leads.

  • Customers: Tolt didn't receive the payment. Go to Settings › Integrations › Logs and look for the payment event and its result. With Stripe, also check that tolt_referral is sent in the metadata.

  • No commission, but the payment is there: no flow matched the transaction. See What are flows?

Still stuck? Contact us via chat with the partner link you used, the test customer's email and the time of the purchase. We can test the integration with you.

Good to know

  • When you're done, delete the test partner, customer and commission so they don't show up in your reports.
