What are flows?

How flows turn partner activity into commissions: triggers, actions, options and conditions.

Written by Nick

A flow is a rule that tells Tolt what to do when something happens in your program. For example, pay 20% on every payment, pay $5 for every new lead, or move a partner to another group. Every commission Tolt creates automatically comes from a flow.

You'll find your flows under Flows. To start from a ready-made setup, see Create flows from templates.

The four parts of a flow

  1. Name your flow: a name, a description and the partner group the flow applies to.

  2. Flow trigger: the event that starts it.

    • New payment: runs for each new payment from a referred customer, including subscription renewals.

    • New signup: runs when a new referred customer signs up as a lead or a free user.

Create flow step 2 with the New payment and New signup triggers
  3. Flow action: what happens.

    • Generate commission: a percentage or a fixed amount. New signup flows pay fixed amounts only.

    • Switch group: moves the partner to another partner group.

  4. Conditions: optional rules about the partner, customer or transaction that must be true for the flow to run. See Flow conditions explained.

Options for commission flows

In step 3, a commission flow can also have:

Good to know

  • How many flows you can have depends on your plan: 3 on Basic, 5 on Growth, and unlimited on Pro and Enterprise. See Plans and feature availability.

  • Each partner group has its own flows. A flow only runs for partners in the group it's assigned to.

  • Every flow whose trigger and conditions match runs, and there's no priority order. If two commission flows match the same payment, the partner earns both, so keep conditions from overlapping.

  • Changing a flow only affects new payments and sign-ups. Commissions that already exist stay as they are.

  • On the Flows page, the trigger shows as Transaction created for New payment flows and Lead created for New signup flows.
